Quiz: The Internet Backbone: How Data Travels Across the Globe

Question 1

What is the primary function of an Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

To provide the high-speed network infrastructure that interconnects major regional networks

Answer

To store user data permanently

Answer

To manage email delivery

Answer

To host websites

Question 2

Which of the following best describes the role of Tier 1 networks in the Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

They can connect directly to each other and provide international routes without restriction

Answer

They rely on other networks to provide connectivity

Answer

They are the only networks capable of global data routing

Answer

They are local ISPs serving small towns

Question 3

How do backbone networks typically ensure data packets are delivered efficiently across the globe?

Accepted Answer

Through the use of redundant pathways and advanced routing protocols

Answer

By using a single centralized server to route all traffic

Answer

By limiting connections to one country at a time

Answer

By storing all data packets until a user requests them

Question 4

What is a key characteristic of peering agreements between Internet backbone providers?

Accepted Answer

They involve mutual data exchange without payment when traffic is symmetrical

Answer

They are always free and involve no financial exchange

Answer

They require one provider to pay the other for data transfer

Answer

They are only used for local, not international, data transfer

Question 5

Which protocol is fundamental to routing on the Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)

Answer

HTTP

Answer

FTP

Answer

SMTP

Question 6

Why might a backbone network operator prefer multiple routes to the same destination?

Accepted Answer

To ensure redundancy and optimal data flow in case of link failures

Answer

To decrease network security

Answer

To reduce the overall speed of data transmission

Answer

To simplify network management by using a single pathway

Question 7

What impact does submarine cable infrastructure have on the Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

It provides a critical physical layer for high-capacity international data transmission

Answer

It reduces the speed of data transfer compared to satellite transmission

Answer

It is only used for local connections within countries

Answer

It increases latency significantly due to underwater placement

Question 8

How does traffic engineering influence data travel on the Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

It balances network load by directing traffic through preferred paths

Answer

It ensures all data takes the fastest possible route regardless of network load

Answer

It blocks traffic during peak hours to reduce congestion

Answer

It randomly routes traffic to test network resilience

Question 9

Which of the following is a potential risk to the stability of the Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

Misconfiguration of BGP routing tables

Answer

Increased use of wireless networks

Answer

Growth in popular website traffic

Answer

Adoption of IPv6 addresses

Question 10

What distinguishes national backbones from the global Internet backbone?

Accepted Answer

National backbones only handle data within a single country, lacking international interconnectivity

Answer

National backbones are slower than global backbones

Answer

National backbones are not connected to any international networks

Answer

National backbones handle all global email traffic
